When the first settlers arrived in
this area around 1846, the area was known for its cotton crops. Between
1850 and 1902 two settlements existed. One community was called Rock Hill
and the second was known as Richland. Realtors know that the
development of these small communities was brought about when county clears
orders small tracts of land to be sold. These tracts or 160 acres were
sold for the $3.50 an acre. Dr. A.T. Bryant of McKinney purchased the
tracts and this area later became the geographic nucleus for the town. The establishment of the St. Louse and San Francisco Railroad in
March of 1902 created the change that forced the communities of Rock Hill and Richland
to merge forming the town of Prosper. For years, Prosper Texas real estate
agents know that the central stop for the railroad between Dallas and Sherman
would be right her in town. When community officials applied for a post
office under the name Richland, they were informed that this name was already
taken. J.C. Slaughter suggested the name Prosper, because the crops
that year has been so good and this name was accepted. The town or Prosper
was incorporated in 1914 with a commission form of government and a population
of 500. U.N. Clary was mayor and served the town for the 49 years.
As a survivor of war and depression, the mechanization of farming provided the
next big impact on Prospers population. In 1980, the growth on the
Metroplex led to a revitalization of Prosper Texas real Estate. Today this
is the homes of more that 100 businesses and many new families.
